Wellness Wednesday's (WW) are one day workshops that provide members a space to explore wellness topics and learn new skills to help with everyday living.
What kind of topics will I see in Wellness Wednesdays?

- Dance class
- Art Therapy
- Resume writing
- Cooking Healthy
- Affordable, accessible Fitness

AUGUST 2010 WELLNESS "MONDAY"
In August FIERCE staff and members took a trip to historic Riis Beach for a day of relaxation and rest. FIERCE folks have been working hard to make this summer fabulous so we rewarded ourselves with a day at the beach in which we parktook in Beach workouts and meditation, and discussions around preventing burnout. Ahhh, what a wonderful day.
JULY 2010 WELLNESS WEDNESDAY
On July 21st, 2010 members gathered to have a real discussion on the portrayal of bodies in the media and how it impacts us as LGBTQ youth of color. We had the opportunity to talk about its personal effects and made committments to how we would stop perpetuating body sterotypes and fight the sterotypes out there.
MAY 2010 WELLNESS WEDNESDAY
Learn a few basic moves in self defense that will help you defend yourself. As you know our community is often targeted for violence and we rarely have folks that will defend us. We will be focusing on some moves to help us in the most common scenarios. Our facilitator will Angie, a member of FIERCE. Angie is a trained black belt and has been a member for over 2 years. MARCH 2010 WELLNESS WEDNESDAY
FIERCE hosted March Wellness Wednesday wth guest facilitator/practioners from Third Root! We' explored Yoga, accupunture and herbal medicine.
December Wellness Wednesday: Flawless Spa Bliss!!
Join us for the last wellness wednesday of the year titled "Flawless Spa Bliss." Part Pajama Party, part rejuvenation, part healing, this is a great event to close out the year together with! The event will consist of learning some techniques around wellness and healing (like....learning how to make face mask!) and of course fun! Click here for more info.
"Let's Talk Relationship's!" lead by Becca!
For the month of November for Wellness Wednesday we'll be discussing....RELATIONSHIPS! In this workshop we'll be discussing essential relationship truths! learning some skills around boundaries and how to support our friends and selves who may be in abusive relationship. This workshop is for all members regardless of relationship status!! These skills can be applied to an intimate dating relationship or your friends! Food will be provided as well as metrocards. "Erotizing Safer Sex" a workshop lead by GHMC
Join FIERCE during the "Season of Sex" for Wellness Wednesday on October 14th from 5p-7p. Gay Men's Health Crisis (GHMC) will be leading an exciting workshop titled "Erotizing Safer Sex". We'll be discussing how to keep the sexy in sex and still keep yourself safe! Afterwards GHMC will be offering free and confidential HIV testing here at the FIERCE office.
Art Therapy with Altered Books
What are altered books:
- Altered Book: n. An altered book is a form of mixed media artwork that changes a book from its original form into a different form, altering its meaning.
Not creative? That's ok! all levels are welcomed. Altered book making is a great way to be creative, release pent up frustration and create art is relaxing accessible and affordable way. Participants should bring personal mementos and/or pictures to put in the books. FIERCE will be providing books and materials needed to make books.
On August 26th from 12-6 FIERCE will be at Riis Beach Bay 1 for some relaxation and rejuvenation! Destress from the summer and gear up for the fall! We'll be participating in wellness activities ranging from fitness, meditation, team building and of course fun in the sun! This is a members only event. FIERCE will provide food, drinks and activities. Members are responsible for their own items such as towels, blankets,umbrella, etc.
On Wednesday July 22nd from 3:00-4:30 pm, Wellness Wednesday presents Meditation 101. This is a special “Wellness Wednesday” as we incorporate mediation as centering technique. The special item is to accommodate ELP 2 participants, however ALL members are encouraged to attend.
We will discuss:
* What is meditation?
* How does meditating help us become more grounded?
We will then have learn the proper techniques to mediating and have a group meditation.
Self Defense with the Center for Anti-Violence Education!
On June 17th, come to FIERCE to learn some self Defense with the Center for Anti-violence education! We'll be learning some basic moves, how to de-escalate violence and have some discussion.
We'll be talking about barriers to fitness and setting healthy goals that make us feel good! Then we'll have acutal practice when we learn some moves that make for a quick, acessible, total body workout.
Eating well, even when your $ is running low!!
Times are hard and that makes eating healthy and grocery shopping really difficult! Join us at FIERCE for an afternoon of shopping for healthy food on a budget and then learn how to turn those groceries into a nutrious meal that can feed a lot of people or turn it into leftovers! This event is free and metrocards provided!!
