Support FIERCE's Proposal for an LGBTQ Youth Center on Pier 40updated: Wednesday November 04, 2009Share This Petition: on Facebook | Myspace | Twitter
Dear FIERCE ally:
The Hudson River Park (West Village waterfront) is crucial for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer and Questioning (LGBTQ) youth to have a safe and supportive place to grow, be themselves and develop their leadership. The recent developments in the West Village have threatened to push out these youth, who continue to seek the haven of the West Village to find community, safety and family.
For several years, there have been attempts to bring in private developers to develop Pier 40. West Village community stakeholders have been clear that we are against private development, and want the needs of everyone in the community - including LGBTQ youth - to be met though development at the Park. Pier 40 provides a great opportunity for the needs of LGBTQ youth to be met, by building a 24-hour LGBTQ youth center.
LGBTQ social services experienced some of the harshest cuts in years. Several drop-in centers have been forced to close, while other service organizations have cut LGBTQ youth programming. FIERCE's proposal for an LGBTQ youth center at Pier 40 would provide many of these services, such as education training and job support.
Let Mayor Bloomberg, Council Speaker Christine Quinn, and Hudson River Park Trust Board of Directors know that you support FIERCE's proposal for an LGBTQ youth center on Pier 40.
