Hello,  my name is Elegost, my PGP (Preferred Gender Pronoun) is he and him, and I am an active member at FIERCE.

On August 28th, FIERCE had its monthly FIERCE Friday event, but this event was different from the others because it was the first time political candidates had come to the FIERCE office to talk directly to FIERCE members and LGBTQ youth.  Yetta Kurland and Maria Derr, both of whom are running for District 3 City Council, came to FIERCE and talked about the issues that LGBTQ youth in the West Village face and ways to help resolve those issues.

On August 28, 2009, FIERCE hosted our first-ever District 3 City Council Candidates forum to address concerns of LGBTQ youth.  The forum included a Q&A with candidates on topics such as the inclusion of a 24-hour LGBTQ Youth Center on Pier 40, NYPD and LGBTQ community relations, and other critical issues.

Since its inception in 2002, the Education for Liberation Project (ELP) has been the cornerstone of FIERCE’s leadership development work to build the power of LGBTQ youth of color.   In 2009, FIERCE members, staff and allies celebrated in a big way as we graduated the largest ELP classes in the history of the organization.  This year alone, over 27 members have moved through the program, which is a three-level, paid internship for new and active members.
